Professions

Eve revolves around space flight, it is therefore essential to understand the basic attributes of your ships see: Ship Guide: Attributes.

If your pilot is going to grow, you will need isk to buy skills, ships, equipment and more, doing the tutorials can raise you more starting ISK and is a good introduction to an agent mission ring (event type agents). After the tutorials there are a number of methods/activities/paths to gain isk and experience, these can be thought of as professions and include:

Miner
Mining the asteroid belts (AB's) is an option, considered easy isk but not the most engaging activity. It's a good starting profession, as ore and their refined minerals form the economic basis of Eve. Professional miners in a good supporting corporation can make huge amounts of isk out in 0.0 using a Hulk or Rorqual

Industrialist
This can include researching blueprints, inventing Tech 2 items, and manufacturing. Building ships and items relies on miners and refiners to provide materials for construction. If you buy the base materials cheap, create something far more valuable and sell that at a good profit, you stand to make a fortune. The builder career combines well with that of the trader and the miner.

Hunter
Hunting for NPC pirates is also fairly profitable, especially if you carefully loot. You'll want to learn how to find the value of an item and how to refine loot without loss. Also, you'll need to learn how to setup a tank, if you want to be able to fight npc pirates that yield better bounties and loot. A bit more interesting than belts might be deadspace complexes.

Mission Runner
Running missions for agents is another combat-oriented way of making isk. It's a bit more advanced, since you will be entering deadspace, just as with deadspace complexes. And to make it really profitable, you'll need to find the best available agents and improve your standing with their corp or faction to get access to better agents.

Trader
Trading on the markets can be a real fast track to wealth. You'll need some isk to get started and you'll need to be able to fly an industrial class ship. But if you keep an eye on the markets and time your plays well, it's probably the fastest way to make isk without special skills or combat. If you train the TradeSkills though, you'll be able to control your trade empire better and directly increase your profits.

Pirate
Preying on other pilots as a pirate may be your thing. Ransom travelers for toll, steal miners' ore from their containers or blow up wealthy merchants. As a starting player, this is probably not something you should get into rightaway, as your chances in pvp combat won't be very good. But if you focus your training on PvP, you could be in the gatecamping or warmongering business real soon.
